We assembled the following two tables to show all mid-term elections back to 1902. That required we use the Dow Jones Industrial Average for our "proxy" of the market. The tables list the sitting president, the breakdown of the U.S. Senate by political party before and after the election, the breakdown of the House of Representatives by political party before and after the election and the gross percentage movement of the Dow 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years after the election. Interestingly enough, election day was a stock market holiday until 1970. Our percentage calculations are done from the close on the day before election day until 1970 and the close on election day thereafter.
