David A. Bush is a Professor of Radiation Medicine and Vice Chairman of Clinical Research for the Department of Radiation Medicine, Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC), Loma Linda, California. He also directs the radiation oncology residency training program at that institution, and has served as the Medical Center’s Institutional Principal Investigator for the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG). He serves LLUMC as a member of its Institutional Review Board, the General Tumor Board, and the Thoracic Tumor Board.
Dr. Bush is a native of southern California and completed his undergraduate education at Westmont College, Santa Barbara, where he majored in physics and biology; he was graduated Cum Laude in 1986. He received his M.D. degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1992, being selected for the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and completed his postgraduate intern and residency training in radiation oncology in 1996. Dr. Bush was certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology in 1997, and recertified in 2007.
Among Dr. Bush’s active professional and institutional affiliations are membership in the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO); RTOG; the American College of Radiology; the American Medical Association; the California Medical Association; and the Gilbert H. Fletcher Society. He pursues several active research interests at the James M. Slater, M.D. Proton Treatment and Research Center, including being Principal Investigator for clinical studies of proton radiation therapy for lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and breast cancer. He is the PI of two ongoing clinical trials investigating the use of proton therapy for partial breast irradiation which has resulted in three published manuscripts and multiple presentations at regional and national meetings. This work represents the most extensive work to date in the use of proton therapy for partial breast irradiation.
Dr. Bush has authored or co-authored several book chapters and peer-reviewed publications in radiation therapy, with a focus on proton therapy. Among these are articles on proton radiation treatment of medically inoperable cancers of the lung, acoustic neuromas, cancer of the prostate, breast cancer, and hepatocellular carcinomas. He is actively involved in clinical investigations of novel and expanded applications of proton radiation therapy, including hypofractionation studies, dose-escalation studies, and refinements of proton beam delivery by means of advanced technology, such as precision alignment systems and intensity-modulated proton therapy.
