Jim welcomes David Bush MD, a Professor of Radiation Medicine and Vice Chairman of Clinical Research for the Department of Radiation Medicine, Loma Linda University Medical Center. Dr. Bush discusses his expertise in proton beam therapy in the treatment of breast cancer. He notes that breast cancer is quite complex and many factors can cause it, from environmental, to lifestyle to genetic predisposition. Unlike treatment for prostate cancer, surgery is still the first indicated treatment for breast cancer, which can then be followed by proton beam therapy. The key benefit of proton beam therapy for breast cancer is the avoidance of radiating normal tissue, as well as nearby bones and organs. Dr. Bush also discusses the treatment protocol, as well as the success rate five years after proton beam therapy.
