Lifetime Income Series: Quest for Yield in a Zero Interest Rate World

This week Jim and John return to a topic that remains on the radar for all retirees; where to find yield in an interest rate world that remains zero bound? Given all of the recent market turmoil there has been a rush to safety, which has driven down yields despite the Fed’s rate hike in December. So what do investors do in this kind of market where just about everything fluctuates and interest rates remain at historically low levels? Retirees certainly can’t live off the returns on cash, CD’s, money market funds or Treasury bills. Jim begins by explaining why he likes bonds versus bond funds, and explains the key differences between them. They also discuss the importance of holding a diversified mix of assets that can handle different objectives and needs while in retirement. Jim discusses the elements in a well-diversified mix of assets, and illustrates how they would work through a case study. The guest this week is Dr. Gary Small of the UCLA Memory Clinic and Director of the UCLA Center on Aging. They discuss various aspects of brain health and disease prevention, including how stress can damage the brain.
