Jim welcomes back Dr. Andrew Lo, Professor of Finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management and the director of MIT's Laboratory for Financial Engineering. They discuss Professor Lo’s proposal to use financial engineering to spread risks among investors and provide financial incentives to develop successful cancer treatments. Professor Lo notes that pharmaceutical companies feel challenged because there isn’t enough funding at the early stages of clinical research, and the pipeline is becoming thinner and thinner because there’s less and less venture capital money going into the industry. He explains how the Cancer Mega-Fund works, and how investors can make good money in finding a cure for cancer. In 2012 Time Magazine named Andrew Lo to its list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
