Bin Laden's huffing and puffing has not ignited the smoldering embers of Muslim resentment into universal calamity. Since 9/11, no skyscrapers have tumbled to the ground. No cities lie in ruin. America waits, skeptical of Bedouin braggadocio. We are told that the CIA has managed to hinder al Qaeda's operations. But no one in the Bush administration is cackling after laying an egg in Iraq, and none dare call it victory. At the same time, there is no indication of defeat (though defeatism is a leading theme of the Kerry campaign). Americans do not like to dwell on future horrors, and they certainly don't like a loser. Lacking real interest, their tendency is to suspend judgment in favor of shopping. Some turn their quizzical beaks toward Russia and the Kremlin's latest plot device. Whatever became of Russian democracy? What has happened to the Tooth Fairy?
And what about al Qaeda? Has that fearful band lost its bloody pizzazz? Have they declined from the glory of 9/11 to bungled shoe-bombings and vainglorious decapitations? And how does the massacre at Beslan fit into the general terrorist scheme? One might trace the cause from the effect: Billions lost in New York on 9/11, the Pentagon ablaze, Wall Street staggered, an administration forced to mount military operations on the far side of the globe. Compare this with the heart-wrenching massacre at Beslan, where the killing of innocent children left a totalitarian engine unharmed and uplifted, its economy more open to militarization, its government justified in seizures and conscriptions. No buildings destroyed, no columns of smoke rising from the Kremlin. Here a bloody "event" gives impetus to a red star resurrection. Meanwhile we are told, by a refracted government/media rumor, that al Qaeda has regained its lost muscle. It is ready to strike a mighty blow. Like Satan in Paradise Lost, the fallen Saudi Islamist is, "Left ... at large to his own dark designs...." In fact, bin Laden is covered in darkness. We do not know if he is alive or dead, on dialysis or medicated, organically fundamentalist or fabricated from the whole cloth of a so-called "national liberation" struggle. We are told that his next attack will be "bigger and deadlier" than 9/11. His means of attack, his timing, his choice of target - all remain a mystery, unfathomed. One thing is certain: al Qaeda is bound to find thousands (if not millions) of willing recruits. Bin Laden's popularity is high among Islam's envy-stricken and resentful. Last March a Pew survey revealed that bin Laden is favored by 65 percent in Pakistan and 31 percent in Turkey.
Bin Laden's North American lieutenant is said to be Adnan Shukrijumah, who was last seen in Mexico. The CIA admits that al Qaeda's operations remain a mystery, which says more about the CIA than anything else. One is forced to lament that never was so much spent by so many to learn so little. The nations that cracked Hitler are not what they used to be. They cannot crack the cave-dwelling Bedouin. This is due, in part, to treachery and to the "long march" of nihilism through kindergartens and colleges. It is no small commentary on the state of Europe, the motherland of Western Civilization, that a majority of Europeans (76 percent) oppose President Bush's foreign policy (according to a study published by the German Marshall Fund and Compania di San Paolo in Italy). Europe commits suicide for a shabby, false peace - drinking the hemlock of socialism, multiculturalism and cheap Mohammedan labor. And why has this happened? Because Europe has eaten itself hollow with secularism and cleverness.
There has never been corruption like this in all of history, and never such a promise of calamity. From small beginnings the evil has grown: from bad books and insignificant villains to a vast system of deception and self-deception. Is there anyone who comprehends what has happened? Europe rotted to the core, America distracted and misdirected, Africa sinking into barbarism, South America led by Castro's disciples, communist China out-producing America in consumer goods and Soviet Russia rising Phoenix-like from its own ashes! In 1960 the socialist countries occupied more than 26 percent of the earth's land surface with 35 percent of the world's population and one third of the world's industrial output. In 2004 the socialist countries have merged with the capitalist countries in a way that defies accounting. It is not generally known, but the great struggle continues. What was true about the main axis of global conflict in 1960 is true today: "that the present epoch, whose main content is the transition from capitalism to socialism, is an epoch of struggle between the two opposing social systems, an epoch of socialist and national liberation revolutions, an epoch of the downfall of imperialism and the liquidation of the colonial system, an epoch of the transition of more and more peoples to the socialist path, an epoch of the triumph of socialism ... on a world scale." (V.D. Sokolovskiy, RAND translation, Soviet Military Strategy, pp. 278-79.)
A malevolent power is rising. This power is coy enough to avoid self-identification until its triumph is final and irrevocable. In his book, Through the Eyes of the Enemy, Col. Stanislav Lunev wrote: "The GRU [Russian military intelligence] and the KGB helped to fund just about every antiwar movement and organization in America and abroad. Funding was provided via undercover operatives or front organizations." Two pages later he noted: "Although most Westerners don't realize it, the GRU is one of the primary instructors of terrorists worldwide." On the next page he continued: "while the terrorists involved in the World Trade Center bombing may never have attended GRU training, the GRU was responsible for the formation of the terrorist group that they belonged to."
In the north Caucasus they have a saying: "Take Moscow's agents out of Chechnya and war will disappear." Apply this statement to other continents, qualify the hyperbole and adjust for China; pour the contents into the heads of American pundits, politicians and spymasters; shake thoroughly until a few heads begin to explode; then leave at room temperature for thirty days.
